Brad Mehldau at Princeton U Concerts 2/1: Limited Tix Available
Hot House Jazz Guide Announcement
PRINCETON, NJ – On Thursday, February 1 at 7:30PM, Princeton University Concerts (PUC) will present renowned jazz pianist and composer Brad Mehldau in a rare solo recital of original compositions as well as covers of popular music at Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall.Brad Mehldau is considered to be “the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times). As he most often performs with his celebrated trio, this solo recital is an exceptional opportunity to hear this legendary pure voice as both musician and composer, uninterrupted. With the touch of Bill Evans, range of Keith Jarrett, and innovation of Chick Corea, the 2020 GRAMMY-winner is perhaps most well-known for his stunning improvisations that transcend genre through their combination of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure. His latest suite, Fourteen Reveries for Piano, brings together the dichotomy of his musical personality as both improviser and structural genius—the work is a meditation on the space a composer leaves between specific directions that lets the beauty of the music reveal itself, while still allowing new discovery. In addition to premiering this work, Mehldau will play L.A. Pastorale, selections from Suite: April 2020, which he wrote during pandemic lockdowns, and songs from Elliott Smith, Radiohead, and others to be announced from stage. ABOUT BRAD MEHLDAUOne of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader to major international exposure in collaborations with guitarist Pat Metheny, soprano Renee Fleming, and saxophonist Joshua Redman, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms, in both trio (with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums) and solo settings, has seen brilliant re-workings of songs by contemporary songwriters like The Beatles, Cole Porter, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Gershwin, and Nick Drake; alongside the ever-evolving breath of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times).BRAD MEHLDAU, JAZZ PIANOWHEN: Thursday, February 1, 2024, 7:30PMWHAT: Fourteen Reveries (Premiere) L.A.
