November Hot House Jazz Guide
As I attend shows and listen to the music, I often wonder: How did they come up with that? Jazz is so beautiful, chaotic, and efficient. There are countless discussions on its origins, with some attributing it to New Orleans and others to pre-New Orleans traditions. However, all agree that Africa played a major role in its foundation. This month, we interviewed two masters—Abdullah Ibrahim and Rene McLean—both of whom have strong African roots but play music that originated in America. Jazz and Pan-Africanism are profoundly intertwined, celebrating and grappling with the complex histories and cultures of the African diaspora. I am in complete awe of those who originated this expression, those perfecting it, and the dedication artists invest in their craft.
