May Hot House Jazz Guide

May Hot House Jazz Guide

In this issue, we are celebrating Duke Ellington's 125th birthday. As we delved into the stories, his family, and the music, we fell in love with Duke all over again. Mercedes Ellington served as our go-to source for the official Duke stories. She graciously shared stories and wise sayings from her grandfather and her father. We also delved into Mercedes's own story, which left us in awe. From her historic debut as the first black June Taylor dancer to the beauty and challenges she encountered in her desire to dance, as well as her impressive resume as a dancer, actor, and producer; there was so much to cover. Our writer's room was buzzing with excitement, though we found that there simply wasn't enough time or space to include everything. We only wish we had more space... We do hope that you will enjoy the selections we have made for Duke's 125th celebration!
