The Jamie Baum Septet+ at NUBLU Mon, Apr 3

Hot House Jazz Guide Announcement

“Baum premiered new music replete with crisscrossing odd meters, unusual ensemble phrases, challenging structures…that produced wonderful solos…exhilarating…fresh music that opened new paths of improvisation and soloing possibilities for her tightly knit, extremely well-tuned Septet+…Baum writes for musicians and music lovers, compositions based in the past but not beholden to it, performed by musicians girded for exploration and challenge.” -Ken MicallefDizzy’s Jazz Club - DownBeat review (2/28/22)https://downbeat.com/news/detail/jamie-baum-septet-delivers-post-pandemic-message

“Anyone whos heard Baums singular recordings – and/or had seen the group blow away Lake George Jazz Weekend a few years back – knows that the flutist makes music that crosses all borders and boundaries. Baum... always returns to the small army shes commanded brilliantly for many years…. (her) bag is full to the brim with brilliant tricks, as well all hear when the disc is finally released.” -Jay HunterSenate “Jazzstock” - Nippertown review (3/10/23)https://nippertown.com/?p=1139206

The music by composer/flutist Jamie Baum, composed for her critically-acclaimed Jamie Baum Septet+ and guest vocalist, utilizes texts by women poets of various ages and ethnicity to illustrate the palpable, personal and communal experience of living in the time of Covid-19 (and simultaneous socio-political movement) and its abrupt transformation of our world. From her Hell’s Kitchen, NYC perspective (initially the US epicenter” of Covid-19), Baum looked to other artistic platforms for hope, solace and inspiration. Examples include: "What Kind of Times Are These" by Adrienne Rich, My Grandmother in the Stars” by Naomi Shihab Nye, "An Old Story” by Tracy K. Smith, sorrow song” by Lucille Clifton, etc. These poems reflect and suggest, both symbolically and vividly, how we’d arrived at this moment in time, how we might manage during this time, and how we might hope to learn and emerge from the experience.
