ELIO VILLAFRANCA
DIZZY’S / MARCH 7-9
Cuban-born, Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Elio Villafranca, in his first big band performance, will be bringing his latest project, Tres Aguas, to life in an exhilarating suite of rhythm and movement drawing from flamenco, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Peruvian, jazz, and New Orleans traditions. The big band will celebrate the vibrant musical styles from across the Americas, the Afro-Diaspora, and Spain. Based in New York City, Elio was classically trained in percussion and composition at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. He received a 2010 Grammy Nomination in the Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year category. In 2008, The Jazz Corner named Elio Villafranca as pianist of the year. His debut album, Incantations Encantaciones (CD Baby, 2008) featuring Pat Martino, Terell Stafford, and Dafnis Prieto was listed as one of the 50 best jazz albums of the year by JazzTimes magazine. Come and stay over three nights for the energy, connection, and unforgettable sounds. SBL
