Weekend Jazz Hang (Curated by Hot House Jazz Magazine)

RAFAEL HERNÁNDEZ – El Jibarito de Borinquen | Puerto Rico’s beloved “country boy” who became the father of Latin America’s songbook

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Hot House shines a light on the extraordinary yet often overlooked legacy of Rafael Hernández — Puerto Rico’s most celebrated composer and one of Latin America’s greatest musical voices. Before he penned classics like Lamento Borincano and El Cumbanchero, Hernández was a young trombonist in the Harlem Hellfighters Regimental Band, recruited by James Reese Europe during World War I. Alongside 17 other Puerto Rican musicians, he helped introduce proto-jazz and ragtime to Europe, shaping the soundscape that would fuel both the Harlem Renaissance and the Latin jazz tradition. His story is one of artistry, resilience, and cultural pride — a reminder that the roots of jazz are as global as they are American.

✨ Read the full story in this issue of Hot House Jazz Magazinewritten by Elena Martínez and edited by Bobby Sanabria — as they uncover the Puerto Rican voices within the Harlem Hellfighters and trace Hernández’s journey from Aguadilla to New York, Havana, and beyond.
