Rarely does an artist come along gifted with multiple talents like Manhattan mainstay Daryl Sherman.A savvy singer and pianist, she is a unique stylist known for her boundless repertoire, charm, wit and devotion to legendary songbirds like Mildred Bailey. With stellar cohorts including Loren Schoenberg on tenor sax and piano, Daryl's A -team is steeped in jazz history and repertoire enough to convince any audience that Mildred Bailey and Daryl Sherman were indeed "Born To Swing". When Artie Shaw formed a new band in the '80s Daryl was his chosen singer. She's also appeared with Wynton Marsalis and the JALC Orchestra plus Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. A much heralded14 year run at New York's Waldorf=Astoria earned Daryl Sherman world wide fame.Mildred Bailey plays an important role in jazz history as the first female singer with a jazz band, Paul Whiteman Orchestra and then with husband Red Norvo, who pioneered jazz on the vibraphone. Mildred's high pitched girlish tone and canny musicianship can be heard on a treasure chest of 30s &40s recordings that still hold up today. Two of Daryl Sherman's many recordings "Celebrating Mildred Bailey and Red Norvo" and "Born To Swing" (Audiophile) are crafted to display the amazing range of material plus artistry that Mildred and her musicians all shared. Hits like "Georgia On My Mind," "Thanks For The Memory" influenced Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sinatra. Mildred Bailey's childhood home in Tekoa, WA was on Indian tribal land that nurtured her deep spirituality and mellifluous voice. In May 2005, Daryl Sherman performed with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra honoring their famous songbird in an event "Mildred Bailey Come Home." News items mention that recent Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone is considering playing Mildred Bailey in an upcoming biopic. There's a future in the past! Daryl Sherman's future includes stints in UK, Holland and her native Little Rhody where she'll be inducted this April into the Rhode Island Music Hall Of Fame.Don't miss this chance to catch her at Birdland!
