August Issue Announcement - 3

August Issue

Max Roach

is considered one of the most important drummers in the music currently called jazz. He transitioned in August,  17 years ago, and would have been 100 years old this year.  As we prepared research for the #Max100 article, we noticed the massive body of content that he left us to comb through.  The Library of Congress, alone, has 170 linear feet of materials just about Max! The collection includes music manuscripts, writings, correspondence, business papers, photographs, programs, sound recordings, and other materials related to his career.  The sheer massive amount of content was mind boggling; We didn't know where to start.  Lead writer Ronald Scott reached out to the Roach family, who helped guide us to the answer.  They told us the story of Max through their words. We then understood ... Max was a family man.  He loved his family.  His family included his children as well as the community of musicians and people who loved and supported his music / creations.  He is one of the original architects of modern jazz. With that understanding, we are all part of the Max Roach village.  This issue honors Max - and the music he helped to bring to life.

This issue includes interviews with Antionette Montague, Isaiah Collier and Fred Hersch.  It also includes stories about Ginger Baker and focus on one of the festivals in the area - the DC Jazz Festival.   Our free publications are available at partner locations throughout the region.  We also publish a special Digital Edition, which includes bonus articles and features not available in the print publication.   The digital edition is available only to our subscribers - which has been increasing :)
